The number of births has also continued to rise. With a total of 6,976 children born for the fourth year in a row, a birth surplus of +689 has been registered. Sophie, Marie and Emil are still the most popular first names for newborn girls and boys respectively.
At daycare facilities in Leipzig, 2,247 more children were looked after than in 2016. In 2017 a total of 45,156 children were registered in the daycare centres. In the 2017/18 school year, the general schools also recorded around 1,746 more pupils than in the previous year.
More and more people in Leipzig have a permanent job: As in previous years, the number of employees subject to social insurance contributions continued to rise both at work (to 262,537 persons) and at home in Leipzig (to 226,578 persons). By contrast, the number of registered unemployed fell. At 20,921 persons, the unemployment rate is 7.0 per cent.
Tourism in Leipzig once more reached record levels in 2017: A total of 1.71 million guests and 3.17 million overnight stays were recorded in hotels and guesthouses. Despite the 3.3 percent drop in the number of visitors, Leipzig Zoo was the number one attraction in the city, with a total of 1.65 million visitors. With a total of 1.61 million visitors, the Leipzig Sport forum came very close to this, not least due to the well-attended RB Leipzig football matches.
