So far, only Lina knows whether the new arrivals are male or female. The father is six-year-old sloth bear Subodh, who came to Leipzig from India in 2013 and has been living in the zoo's sloth bear canyon ever since. Visitors will be able to see the young family for the first time in spring. Right now they need absolute peace and quiet so that a strong bond can develop between mother and child.
Visitor numbers in 2014
Leipzig Zoo had a successful year in 2014. Approximately 1.87 million people visited the "Zoo of the future", enjoying the 850+ different species and 912 young animals. "We are pleased with our positive visitor numbers last year. Once again, we managed to keep figures at a higher level," says Zoo Director Professor Jörg Junhold. The 2014 visitor figures were slightly up on the previous year's total of 1.84 million.
Outlook for 2015: New adventure playground and Kiwara Kopje
Visitors can look forward to a number of new attractions in the coming year. The Kiwara Kopje will open in spring as the new home of the black rhinos - at risk of extinction - the cheetahs and the patas monkeys. Spring will also see the opening of the adventure playground in the former Bear Castle. A 12-metre-high dragon forms the heart of this area, the perfect environment for families to relax and learn at the same time.
Work on completing the monkey islands in the Founder's Garden by spring is proceeding at full steam. The monkey islands will house the howler monkeys, emperor tamarins and golden lion tamarins. We will also be renovating and altering the Congress Hall, including a redesign of the historical concert garden, which we hope to complete in time for the City of Leipzig's 1000th anniversary celebrations. And of course there will be lots of new young animals born and new species added in the coming year.
Leipzig Zoo is also home to a wide range of events aimed at visitors. The summer season opens in March, featuring traditional and ever-popular highlights such as the Whitsun show, Jungle Night and Zoo Activity Days.
