EU bathing waters are regarded as lakes which attract an above-average numbers of visitors, have special regional or national importance and are characterised by good water quality. At present, Saxony contains 34 lakes and reservoirs which satisfy these conditions. In Leipzig they are Lake Cospuden and Lake Kulkwitz.
In order to prevent any danger to health, the public health authorities take a water sample shortly before the start of the swimming season and normally four other samples during the season. The quality of all EU bathing waters in Saxony is currently very good. The current results are published on the website: http://www.gesunde.sachsen.de/badegewaesser.php.
Clean lakes - please help too
In order to maintain these high standards, swimmers can also help to ensure good quality of the bathing water. For example, they should not leave behind any rubbish and should use the sanitary facilities at the bathing areas. Feeding water birds and swimming together with dogs should also be avoided.
