Leipzig is one of the ten German cities which the German Football Association (DFB) is proposing in its bid to host the European Football Championship 2024. The fan festival at the Thomaskirchhof is very enticing. There is, among other things, a course to compare performance. The best participants in the goal shooting contest, table football, speed measurement and other opportunities to participate will be rewarded with prizes. The award-winning football artists Miriam Willems and Sebastian Heller are also on the show programme at the Thomaskirchhof. The Berlin cover band "On my strings" will provide musical entertainment. The DFB has provided 2024 free ice cream scoops in the national colours and a fair trade quiz, so all footie fans will get their money's worth.
St. Thomas choristers, football enthusiasts
Ambassador for the Leipzig candidature is the St. Thomas Choir, which is supporting the city during the international bidding phase of the German Football Association (DFB). "It was not difficult to select our ambassador. With their enthusiasm for football, which they also play in their free time, they embody Leipzig's bid - authentic, emotional, youthful and likeable", says sports mayor Heiko Rosenthal.
UEFA EURO 2024 a great opportunity for Leipzig
"For us as a city, designating it as a venue is a great opportunity: The UEFA EURO 2024 will additionally strengthen Leipzig as an attractive sports and tourism destination," explains Heiko Rosenthal. "Not just top-class football plays a central role in the German bid - especially club sport and thus the football talent factory will be provided with an effective advertising platform in the supporting programme. For popular sport in Leipzig in general, this means that the European Football Championship will provide sustainable impetus for more than 400 sports clubs with around 96,500 members." When selecting the German venues, particular attention was paid to the enthusiasm in the cities, the quality of the stadiums and local levels of know-how.
"The Leipzig bid also had two other focal points. On the one hand, we want to improve the sports infrastructure for Leipzig club sport by 2024 and, on the other hand, our initiatives in the field of fair trade, that is to say fairly traded sports equipment and sports materials, as well as environmental compatibility and sustainability at major sporting events, were positively assessed by the DFB. We want to further expand these priorities in Leipzig," said Rosenthal.
Background
The city of Leipzig was selected by the DFB as one of ten venues for the bid for UEFA EURO 2024. The joint commitment of the city and RB Leipzig as stadium owners has thus paid off. The host country will be decided - Turkey is also competing - on September 27, 2018. In 1988, the DFB last hosted a European Football Championship; at the Europe-wide UEFA EURO 2020, the DFB is one of the twelve hosts, along with Munich. An unforgettable highlight of German football history occurred in 2006, when it was "A time to make friends" and as a venue Leipzig also experienced a historic football summer.
