78% of respondents said that they were very satisfied or satisfied, while 65% said they were looking to the future with optimism or some optimism - in 2013 the proportion of satisfied and optimistic respondents was 76% and 62% respectively. The economic situation in Leipzig was awarded the average mark of 2.7. The respondents rated their own economic situation at 2.5, i.e. the best marks which have been awarded since 1991.
Within the framework of the 2014 Municipal Citizens' Survey, questionnaires were sent last autumn to 6,000 residents of Leipzig between the ages of 18 and 85. Evaluable questionnaires were received from 46% of the survey participants.
The quick report that is now available contains selected results relating to the topics of satisfaction with life, confidence in the future, rents, housing status, relocation plans, net personal income, net household income, livelihood, satisfaction with living conditions in Leipzig, use of municipal budget resources and the most serious problems in the opinion of citizens.
Here are some of the results
The average monthly net income of households in Leipzig rose in 2014 by 113 Euros to 1,662 Euros. The average personal monthly net income of men was 1,333 Euros,
The average personal monthly net income of women was slightly lower at 1,117 Euros, but increased more than that of men compared with 2013.
Leipzig remains a city of tenants. 82% of households in Leipzig live in rented accommodation. The city districts "Mitte" (centre) and "Süd" (south) contain the highest number of tenant households and "Nordwest" (northwest) and "Südost" (southeast) the fewest.
Although rents have risen gradually since the 1990s, this increase has been moderate. Unlike previous years, cold rent increased more substantially than rent including heating in 2014.
The overwhelming majority of citizens in Leipzig said they were satisfied with the natural and environmental conditions.
In the opinion of citizens, municipal budget resources should primarily be spent on schools, day nurseries and road construction/repairs.
56% of respondents said that the biggest problems were crime and safety. 46% regarded the state of roads in Leipzig as the most serious problem.
