The work will begin again on 14 February 2015. The completion of the first year of construction operations provides the occasion for the bodies responsible for the project, the City of Leipzig, the Leipzig transport authority (LVB) and the municipal water company KWL - Kommunale Wasserwerke Leipzig GmbH, to take interim stock of the KARLI project.
Project is within the planned time schedule and budget
The first year of construction operations has been an overall success and this major project is well within time and budget. In particular the LVB has laid rail track with an overall length of 750 metres on the side leading to the city centre, with the stretch of temporary track becoming operational in mid-February. Under the direction of the city, new carriageway and pavements were laid between Shakespeare Straße and Paul-Gruner-Straße and between Hohe Straße and the access road to LVZ, while pedestrian access has been created between Paul-Gruner-Straße and Hohe Straße. The west side of the Münzplatz and the side of Peterssteinweg leading to the city centre between Windmühlenstraße and Martin-Luther-Ring has also been completed. KWL has renovated a main sewer, replaced 30 domestic waste water connections and has built six new manholes. In addition, one km of drinking water pipeline has been laid on the east side between Windmühlenstraße and Härtelstraße and 22 domestic connections have been renovated. The effects of unforeseen situations such as the accidents in Paul-Gruner-Straße and Richard-Lehmann-Straße have been absorbed.
In spite of the inevitable restrictions which are caused by a project of this size, the joint efforts of the project organisers, the building companies, local restaurants, pubs and shops have ensured that the KARLI area has remained a popular destination for shoppers, guests and partygoers from Leipzig and the surrounding region. Those responsible for the project wish to thank everyone involved for their constructive cooperation, confirming that although not every situation which occurs in construction work can be planned for, all those concerned have made a constant effort to find a quick solution to the problems which arose. The local contact person continues to remain available.
Work to resume on 14 February 2015
After the break in the building work operations will be resumed on 14 February 2015. On the weekend of the 14 - 15 February no trams will be running and the temporary track leading away from the city centre will be removed. Afterwards the trams will run in both directions on the new track leading in the direction of the city centre, with work continuing on individual sections from the middle of April onwards. In March KWL will start work on the drinking water and waste water network between Brau Straße and Körner Straße and in Peterssteinweg. The project organisers will make full use of the summer holiday period, during which the KARLI area will also be closed to trams. From Martin Luther Ring to Härtelstraße and at the Hohe Straße stop the LVB will be constructing both tracks, while track will also be laid in the direction away from the city centre between Härtelstraße and Hohe Straße, as well as in sections to the south of Paul-Gruner-Straße.
The facilities for tram operations will be for the most part completed by the end of August 2015, with completion of the overall KARLI project planned for the middle of November 2015.
The KARLI building project is being implemented jointly by the City of Leipzig, the Leipzig transport authority and the municipal water works.
