The growth of the city is mainly due to the high number of newcomers: Last year, 33,886 people moved to Leipzig, against 26,912 who moved away.
For the first time in years, Leipzig has seen a reduction in birth rates: Last year, 6,779 girls and boys were born in the city, compared with 6,976 in 2017, a new record since 1990.
Nevertheless, births continue to significantly outweigh deaths. In 2018, 6,475 deaths were registered, compared with 6,287 in the previous year. For the fifth consecutive year there has thus been a birth surplus, following a period of almost 50 years during which this was not the case.
Since the year 2000, the population of the city of Leipzig has increased by more than 100,000.
