The fire department and the city lighting department of the transport and public works office helped to erect the tree again this year.
Tree decoration
In the coming days, the tree will be decorated with 300 red and 300 golden baubles, and illuminated by approximately 3000 lights. The lights use energy-efficient and therefore environmentally friendly LED technology. It is expected that the lights will be tested at 4.30pm on 21 November 2019.
The decorations should be completed by 11 November 2019, the same day that construction work begins for the Christmas Market. The tree will be at the market throughout Christmas and New Year until the beginning of January 2020. The decorations will be taken down on 2 January 2020, the tree will be 'felled' again on 3 January 2020 and reused as timber.
This year, Leipzig's Christmas Tree was grown on a private residential estate. The owner arranged for the tree to be felled as its roots were damaging the surrounding buildings and its stability could no longer be guaranteed due to its height.
