The Media Foundation of Sparkasse Leipzig feels an obligation to remember the Peaceful Revolution in 1989. The prize presentation ceremony will therefore take place on 8 October 2016, i.e. one day before 9 October which represents an extremely important date in the Leipzig Autumn of 1989. The winner of the Media Prize is chosen by the Media Foundation Council. The Foundation will accept suggestions with brief informal reasons and the career of the candidate up until 29 February 2016.
The journalistic "Prize for the Freedom and Future of the Media" has been awarded annually by the Media Foundation of Sparkasse Leipzig since 2001. The Leipzig Media Prize is not explicitly presented for virtuoso work by journalists or a single excellent article. Instead, it honours journalists, publishing companies, publicists and institutions all over the world who dedicate themselves to protecting and developing the freedom of the press through their willingness to take risks, great personal commitment, persistence, courage and democratic conviction.
All prizes presented by the Media Foundation, including the Axel Eggebrecht Prize and the Günter Eich Prize, which are awarded alternately every two years, as well as the "Goldene Taube" (Golden Dove) as the Newcomers' Prize in the competition during the Leipzig Documentary Film Festival, are combined under the general term "Leipzig Media Prize".
