Anyone wanting to donate left-over wool for Leipzig's Knitting Nans, or who would like to knit for a good cause too, will receive a warm welcome at the Family Information Office. Left-over wool suitable for baby bootees (any colour, preferably size 2 or 3) can be handed in there.
For almost two years, large numbers of pensioners have knitted a pair of baby bootees for every newborn in Leipzig. There are also knitted teddies, dolls or balls for their older brothers and sisters, and there were even bootees in the German team's colours for the Football World Cup.
Babybox: a welcome gift for little Leipzigers
At the Family Information Office, all newborn Leipzig children are given a welcome gift: a brightly coloured case packed with all kinds of useful things for both parents and baby.
- Parents whose babies were born in Leipzig itself are given their Babybox voucher at the <link buergerservice-und-verwaltung aemter-und-behoerdengaenge behoerden-und-dienstleistungen dienststelle standesamt-34>registry office along with the birth certificate.
- Parents who live in Leipzig but whose baby was born outside Leipzig simply have to bring in the birth certificate and their ID card.
Babybox contents
- Baby towel (from Leipzig Municipal Water Works)
- Night light and socket safety covers (from Leipzig Dept. of Works)
- Voucher for Leipzig LVB transport company's BabyCard: free travel for a year for one adult with a baby
- The Leipzig Family Manual
- Pair of socks (knitted by Leipzig pensioners)
- and much more
The box can be collected during the Family Information Office opening hours.
The Welcome Box was put together in cooperation with the city's LVV Group: Stadtwerke Leipzig GmbH, Kommunale Wasserwerke Leipzig GmbH and Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH. Parents will find gifts and offers for their baby which make everyday life simpler and safer. The LVB BabyCard, for example, gives you and your baby one year's free travel on Leipzig's public transport system.
