In January and February of this year the city's population grew by 2241, for the most part the result of new residents who have moved to the city. In contrast natural population growth, in other words the difference between the birth rate and the death rate, has so far been slightly negative in 2016. This was also the case in 2015 at, with the number of births overtaking the number of deaths only later in the year. So far this year the city has registered significant growth in resident numbers compared to the same period of 2015 (January and February 2015 +1,269 / January and February 2016 +2,241).

Official population count
Saxony's State Department of Statistics has announced the official population of Leipzig with effect from 31 July 2015. The residents of the city number 549,230, which means that Leipzig continues to be the city with the largest population in Saxony. At the same point in time the official population count for Dresden is 537,223. With 246,118 residents Chemnitz follows as the third-largest city in Saxony.
