Mayor Burkhard Jung: "We are faced with major challenges to meet the requirements of continuing population growth. The focus is and remains the construction of schools, in which we want to invest 150 million euros over the coming years. At the same time, we want to lead our city into the digital age. We are investing in a new incubator for the digital economy and pushing ahead with broadband expansion. The associated companies are also pressing ahead with their strategic investments. The L-Gruppe alone is planning investments of 500 million euros. And our housing association LWB, until a few years ago mainly a housing administrator, wants to invest 116 million euros this year alone, including more than a thousand new apartments and two new preschools."
Fire and emergency protection
In addition to these priorities, this year Leipzig is also investing in fire and emergency protection: The fire department plans to invest 13.8 million euros. The most important measure is the renovation of the main fire station on Goerdelerring and the procurement of 14 new fire engines.
Social infrastructure
Leipzig is investing in social infrastructure with the construction of numerous preschools and another four primary schools. The schools are set to open at the start of the 2020 school year. One of the schools is being built right in the city centre on Addis-Abeba-Platz. Among others, there is also the Quartiersschule Ihmelstraße (Volkmarsdorf) and the continuation of the Grünau school centre.
The Klinikum St. Georg is planning a new outpatient building and a modern, environmentally friendly heating supply.
Transport, mobility and infrastructure
Almost 125 million euros will be invested in transport and mobility this year. This includes 22 million euros for road construction projects and investment of 102.6 million euros in public transport. The replacement of the old Tatra trains continues, and at the same time the fleet is being expanded with new trains, in order to offer more people environmentally friendly and safe mobility.
The Stadtwerke plan to invest approximately 128 million euros this year, especially in modern cogeneration units. The Wasserwerke is budgeting with 81 million euros: in addition to the ongoing renovation of the sewage network, the company is investing in a modern laboratory and analysis centre in Probstheida.
In the coming years, these investment amounts from the city and its associated companies will stabilise at similar levels.
