"In the Petersstraße, we have found the perfect place to offer a healthy thirst quencher for locals and of course visitors to the city with this fountain," emphasised Leipzig mayor Burkhard Jung. In 1999, the city of Vienna donated the fountain to the city of Leipzig in connection with the environmental trade fair Terra Tec. The creator of the fountain is the Viennese artist Hans Muhr. The first site of the drinking fountain was the Hainspitze. However, it could not be used further in the course of the city's development.
Free refreshment
The handling of the well is simple and hygienic: the water runs continuously. From spring to autumn it will serve drinking water; over the winter period, the fountain will be packed away to protect it against the weather.
Further water fountains planned
The water supply company is breaking new ground with the construction and operation of public drinking fountains. The drinking water fountain in Petersstraße is therefore intended to pave the way for deeper insights and a number of further installations. Each year, the water supply company intends to commission up to three new drinking fountains in the area of the city and the neighbouring municipalities.
